Nigeria: Super Eagles coach unpaid for 5 months
As Nigeria prepares for its friendly match against Costa Rica on November 10, the Federation is facing enormous financial difficulties. As proof, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has still not received a single check since taking over the reins of the national team last June. If the 62-year-old Portuguese technician has not yet filed a complaint, the NFFhas tried to provide explanations.“
Mr Peseiro’s representatives have told us that he has only received his allowances and bonuses which is very worrying,” an NFF official told BBC Sport Africa . He continues: “His salary is paid by the Ministry of Sports, but we quickly found an alternative arrangement, in collaboration with the ministry, in order to settle the payment of salaries this week.
»The Nigerian Ministry of Sports, which took responsibility for paying Peseiro, blamed the delay on processes for receiving funds from the federal government. ” The issue of Peseiro’s payment will soon be resolved with the understanding of the federation and the coach. Everything is being worked out and we are confident that very soon everything will be settled ,” said a special adviser to Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare.
The NFF is riddled with debt. She owes money to the Portuguese’s predecessor, Gernot Rohr as well as to the players of her national teams. The Super Falcons have still not received their bonuses from the Women’s AFCON and other friendly matches. “ We actually believe the ministry gave the NFF the Wafcon money, but they just refused to give it to us. Imagine playing two games against the United States and another in Japan without being paid a penny. It’s very sad , ”lamented a player from the women’s team.
