Rwanda-Carlos Alos Ferrer: “Not to qualify for the CAN would be a failure”

Rwanda will face Mozambique (June 2) and Senegal (June 7) for the first two days of qualifying for CAN 2023. For the new coach of Amavubi, Carlos Alos Ferrer, not qualifying for this competition would be a failure . Yet Rwanda has not contested the CAN since 2004.

Was it difficult for you to make your first selection two months after your appointment on the bench of Rwanda ?Carlos Alos Ferrer: I followed the championship and the Peace Cup. I had enough time to see players able to meet my requirements. On top of that, I had frank discussions with the coaches to get to know a lot more about the players I picked. I made my choices. And for players playing abroad, how did you proceed?Carlos Alos Ferrer:Currently technology helps us a lot. It’s not that I haven’t been to their games that I don’t know them. Since my appointment, I watched the recent matches that Rwanda played. Those who have been called up are the best at their job.Twelve players among the 28 summoned are defenders. Is there a reason ?CarlosAlos Ferrer: Of course yes. I made this choice given the tactics I want to put in place. Also be aware that this list is not definitive.

“Monnet Paquet was supposed to come but he is injured”

What explains the absence of Kevin Monet-Paquet ?

Carlos Alos Ferrer: I had him on the phone three times. He agreed to come and play but unfortunately he was seriously injured. He is recovering little by little but he is not fit for competition.

Other countries are currently looking for dual nationals to strengthen themselves, what about Rwanda.

Carlos Alos Ferrer: We are thinking about it but it is currently difficult for the June matches. The administrative procedures do not allow us to have these players but in September, it is possible. We will have friendly matches before September to test a lot of players.

What is your goal with the Amavubi?

Carlos Alos Ferrer: The only CAN that Rwanda played was in 2004. I come to qualify this beautiful country once again for the CAN but also for the CHAN. We will do everything to score points at home and do well away from home.

We are in the same group as Senegal, champion of Africa, Mozambique and Benin. We want to qualify for CAN 2023 if we don’t succeed it’s a failure. The match against Senegal is a difficult match. It’s a team with professionals who don’t give up. They are qualified for the next World Cup because they are among the best in Africa. But in front of our spectators, nothing is impossible. Let’s be united with our team.
